Hills and Valleys

Saddleworth is situated in the pennine hills and parts fall within the north-east border of the Peak District National Park. The moors here are made of gritstone and good examples can be seen by the War Memorial. Legend has it that two giants (Alphin and Alderman) fought each other by throwing stones and bolders (their 'kitchen utensils') across the valley to win the heart of Rimmon, the water nymph who lived in the waters of Chew Brook below. Hence, the area is called Pots 'n' Pans as a reference to the rocks thrown. Locals will know that the two hills, Alphin Pike and Alderman Hill are named after the two giants! There are wonderful views over Saddleworth if you have the energy to climb up to the peaks of the hills. Otherwise, driving across Saddleworth Moor towards Holmfirth on the A635 is a great experience to get a feel for the vast moorland and valleys.
