Huddersfield Narrow Canal
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal was once an important means of transporting various goods and freight between the towns of Huddersfield and Ashton-Under-Lyne, passing right through the heart of Saddleworth. The Standedge tunnel, which emerges in Diggle after carving through three miles of pennine moorland, is the longest (5200m), highest (645 ft) and deepest (638 ft) canal tunnel in Britain and is listed as such in the Guinness Book of Records. Since it's restoration in the 1990s, the canal is now very popular with barges regularly passing and people just enjoying a stoll along the tow path. We hope our images give you a sense of the industrial history of Saddleworth.
