Villages

The traditional Saddleworth house: 2-3 storeys high (or more), built of stone with slate roofs, long rows of windows and thick walls. Some of the oldest are at least 300 years old and still very much standing. In the industrial revolution, the residents of the 'weavers cottages' would spin wool inside during the daylight hours. You can find out more about life in Saddleworth from this period at the Saddleworth Museum in Uppermill. Not only were these houses built for practical use, they are also extremely quaint. Dobcross Square is particularly pretty and an excellent example of these buildings. We have also captured some of the churches, pubs and shops in Saddleworth and Shaws Mill (formerly Dobcross Loom Works which was owned by the famous Wrigley family).
